The museum, featuring the formal residence of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, is situated in Cuiheng Village, near the main road from Guangzhou to Zhuhai, 17.6 km southeast to urban districts of Zhongshan, 100 km north from Guangzhou, 20 km south from Macau. Seated against the hills and close to the sea, the museum is in a convenient location, with agreeable climate and surrounded by green trees, fragrant flowers and singing birds.

The museum, now a national base of patriotism education, was founded in 1956 and in 1986 it was listed as a national protected cultural site. The museum has been working hard for many years on protecting the former residence of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and the cultural relics it housed. More than these, efforts were made to protect the environment of the formal residence and make a good use of it. Now the museum covers a total of 120,000 square meters, 70,000 square meters open to the public. Attractions include: the former residence of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Statue of Sun Yat-sen listening to stories about the Taiping Uprising against the Qing Dynasty, the site where Sun Yat-sen experimented on explosives, Cuiheng Folk Houses, Cuiheng Farming Exhibition, Yat-sen Tripod and Jingshi Bell. The museum, themed on Dr. Sun Yat-sen and the social environment of his early childhood, is a comprehensive exhibition reflecting Dr. Sun’s patriotism, his revolutionary ideas and practices. The museum also takes responsibility for protecting some key cultural relics protection units in Guangdong province, such as the former residence of Yangyin, the former residence of Lu Haodong, as well as some key cultural relics protection units in Zhongshan, like the tomb of Lu Haodong, the tomb of Sun Cang, and the former residence of Shuai Fu.

The museum integrates patriotism education into sigh seeing. With the gradually perfected travel facilities and convenient service free for visitors, the museum has been ranked by the National Tourism Administration in 2000 among the first batch of AAAA tourist attractions.
