According to Xiangshan County Annals and the remarks by knowledgeable local elders in Zhongshan City, “Nine Curves River” (also called Nine Curves Water) was initially located on the eastern outskirt of Shiqi, and originated from “Jianshuique”, the Kuliu River which went around the city. “Jianshuique” flows through the original Shiqi Huatuomiao Slaughter House and the present King Hotel. It directly flows into “Qingfeng Bridge” at the joint of the eastern point of Yuanxing Street and Boshan Village, and then flows into the moat at the South Gate of ancient Shiqi City. Since the whole course of the river (from “Jianshuique” to “Qingfeng Bridge”) has exactly 9 curves, the river got its name “Nine Curves River” (recorded in Shiqi City Enceinte Map in the 7th year of Daoguang’s reign of Qing Dynasty). It was said that the surrounding environment of “Qingfeng Bridge” was a scenic spot. A few acres wide, the river was as clear as a mirror, and the fish inside could be seen clearly; along the bund were shady banyans and willows, as well as arbors and stone benches. In the midsummer, the breeze blowed gently, and numerous visitors enjoyed the coolness both at daytime and night, therefore, the bridge got the name “Qingfeng Bridge”. In summer and autumn, there were many “Zidong Boats” floating on the river. At night when the moon was bright and full, tourists would rent boats and traveled down the river with several bosom friends. As for tourists in the boat, some would sing while drinking, some recited poems and painted pictures, some played finger-guessing games and drinking games, some played traditional stringed and woodwind instruments, some played chess and taste tea; as for tourists under the trees along the shore, some would enjoy the coolness and go fishing. According to the senior, “Nine Curves River” had its heyday for over 10 years from the late Qing Dynasty till the early years of the Republic of China. In the 16th year of the Republic of China (1927), owing to the new construction of “East Qiguan Road”, water supply under the bridge was cut off. Afterwards, through decades of irrigation projects construction and diversion and construction of river courses in light of urban construction planning, “Nine Curves River” experienced fundamental changes. In the 1940s, the dragon-boat racing held on the Dragon Boat Festival could still flow straight from Qijiang River to the river opposite to the front gate of Overseas Chinese Middle School of Zhongshan. However, with the past of time, “Qingfeng Bridge”, the stone slab bridge, became a reinforced concrete bridge. After 1970s, “Nine Curves River” gradually disappeared, leaving only brooklets flowing in the east of Hongjiaji which were linked to “Nine Curves River”. Entering the 1990s, large-scale municipal construction was made in the eastern suburban area of Shiqi. Hence, the above-mentioned brooklets were covered into land by reinforced concrete. The high-rise buildings constructed there and along the Zhongshan Road (namely, East Qiguan Road) and East Minzu Road rival with each other, forming part of the new district of Shiqi.
